Viral Culture, Respiratory and Cytomegalovirus Rapid Culture
Also known as: V VIC R
Use
The Viral Culture, Respiratory and Cytomegalovirus Rapid Culture is utilized for the detection of various viruses that may cause respiratory infections, including adenovirus, cytomegalovirus, enteroviruses, herpes simplex viruses 1 and 2, influenza A and B viruses, parainfluenza virus types 1, 2, 3, respiratory syncytial virus, and varicella-zoster virus. It helps in identifying the viral cause of respiratory illnesses and aids in appropriate clinical management and treatment of viral infections.
Special Instructions
Specimen source is preferred for optimal results. If a specific virus is suspected, it is recommended to indicate the virus on the test request form to aid in targeted testing and interpretation.
Limitations
Molecular diagnostics are generally preferred over viral culture for the detection of suspected invasive cytomegalovirus (CMV) due to higher sensitivity and faster results. The test may not detect viral infections if the virus is present in the specimen at a concentration lower than the assay's sensitivity threshold. Viral culture requires viable pathogens and therefore, sample transportation and preservation are critical for accurate results. Virus-specific tests are available and may provide more definitive results for certain viruses.
