β2-Microglobulin
Also known as: Beta-2 Microglobulin, Serum
Use
Evaluate the severity and prognosis of multiple myeloma, chronic lymphocytic leukemia, or non-Hodgkin's lymphoma; detect kidney damage and distinguish between glomerular and tubular kidney disorders.
Special Instructions
Values obtained with different assay methods should not be used interchangeably in serial testing. Consistent use of one assay method is recommended for monitoring each patient's therapy. This procedure is intended for one-time use only and does not provide serial monitoring. If serial monitoring is required, use serial monitoring number 480020 to order instead.
Limitations
Certain drugs, including lithium, cyclosporine, cisplatin, carboplatin, and aminoglycoside antibiotics, can increase β2-microglobulin concentrations. The assay method ICMA (Immunochemiluminometric assay) used for this test makes the results potentially incompatible with results obtained using other assay methods.
