Adrenocorticotropic Hormone (ACTH), Plasma, Four Specimens
Use
The Adrenocorticotropic Hormone (ACTH), Plasma, Four Specimens test is used to evaluate adrenal gland function and to help diagnose conditions related to the overproduction or underproduction of cortisol. This is a multi-specimen test that assesses hormone levels at different time points after a provocative test, which may include administration of a drug or other treatment. The test is critical for diagnosing disorders such as Cushing's syndrome, Addison's disease, and secondary adrenal insufficiency. The series panel aids in the dynamic assessment of ACTH responsiveness, allowing for better clinical insights into adrenal or pituitary disease.
Special Instructions
This panel requires multiple tubes to be drawn at different time points following administration of a drug or other treatment to the patient. Ensure that the clinician is consulted if the panel is ordered without an apparent intervention after the initial blood draw. Patients should stop taking any biotin supplements at least 72 hours prior to sample collection to avoid interference with results.
Limitations
Results may be affected by high-dose biotin (vitamin B7) supplementation, which can cause interference with the test. Therefore, patients are advised to discontinue biotin intake 72 hours prior to the test. Additional confirmatory or reflex tests may be required if initial results are inconclusive or unexpected. The test is not recommended for patients not undergoing a treatment intervention during the testing window, as it is intended for stimulated testing protocols.
