Amikacin, Trough
Also known as: Amikin®
Use
Amikacin is used to treat serious infections caused by susceptible aerobic gram-negative bacilli (e.g., a number of the Enterobacteriaceae, P. aeruginosa). Such infections include bacteremias; intra-abdominal, soft tissue (including burns), bone or joint, lower respiratory tract and complicated urinary tract infections, and meningitis.
Special Instructions
Not provided.
Limitations
Nephrotoxicity occurs in 10-25% of patients using aminoglycosides, with trough levels >8 μg/mL linked to renal damage. The risk of ototoxicity is less clear, with monitoring and dosing adjustments reducing auditory toxicity correlations. Stability issues arise with gel-barrier tubes due to drug absorption, leading to potentially significant clinical impact.
