Anal (Rectal) Cytology, Liquid-based Preparation
Also known as: Anal Pap (LBP)
Use
Diagnose primary and metastatic malignant neoplasms; differential diagnosis of benign versus malignant processes.
Special Instructions
The test involves collecting an anal-rectal cytology (ARC) specimen using a swab. The swab is moistened in tap water and inserted into the anal canal with gentle rotation and pressure to obtain a representative sample from the transition zone. The swab is then vigorously rotated in a preservative solution to ensure adequate release of cellular material for analysis.
Limitations
The test may not detect all cases of anal or rectal neoplasia due to sampling limitations. Additionally, specimens more than 21 days old, improperly labeled, or submitted in expired or frozen conditions could be rejected. The test may also require additional confirmatory or reflex tests, which can affect the turnaround time for final results.
