Bacterial Vaginosis (Sialidase), Trichomonas vaginalis, NAA, Vaginal Yeast Culture
Also known as: BV (Sialidase), Tv (NAA), Vaginal Yeast (Culture)
Use
BV (sialidase) activity: Enzyme activity test for use in the detection of vaginal fluid specimens for sialidase activity, an enzyme produced by bacteria associated with bacterial vaginitis, including Bacteroides spp, Prevotella spp, and Mobiluncus spp, and some G vaginalis. In a recent study, Bradshaw et al demonstrated the test to be 88% sensitive and 95% specific.
Special Instructions
Specimen collection should avoid the cervix to prevent increased risk to OB patients and potential false results, as cervical sialidase activity may differ. Avoid collecting from patients who have used vaginal creams, ointments, spermicides, or douches within 72 hours as results could be affected. Ensure correct specimen labeling to avoid rejection.
Limitations
The test may yield false-negative results if the specimen is collected incorrectly, insufficiently, or from patients currently undergoing antimicrobial therapy. Collection from the cervix, after use of vaginal creams or douches, or from unsuitable swabs or transport methods can lead to inaccurate findings. Specimens from children under the age of 13 may require additional handling.
