Cell Count, Synovial Fluid With Crystals
Use
Evaluate synovial fluid for the presence of RBCs, WBCs, crystals, and for physical appearance
Special Instructions
It is crucial to follow standard collection procedures and ensure that the specimen is transported to the laboratory as soon as possible. Proper labeling and handling of the specimen are essential to avoid rejection due to improper labeling or handling conditions.
Limitations
The stability of the synovial fluid sample is limited. It is unstable at room temperature and should be refrigerated where it remains stable for up to 48 hours. Samples that are frozen, improperly labeled, or more than 48 hours old will be rejected. Additionally, gel-barrier tubes should not be used as they are a cause for rejection. The test may not detect all types of crystals or cells under specific conditions, and results should be interpreted in the context of additional clinical findings.
