Comprehensive Metabolic Panel (14)
Also known as: Comprehensive Metabolic Panel
Use
The Comprehensive Metabolic Panel (CMP-14) is used to assess the general health status of a patient. It provides important information about the body's metabolism, including kidney and liver function, electrolyte and acid/base balance, and levels of blood glucose and blood proteins. This panel is generally ordered as part of a routine health exam, to monitor patients with chronic conditions, or to evaluate symptoms of diseases affecting vital organs. The results offer a comprehensive assessment of patient health that aids in clinical decision-making.
Special Instructions
Patient should fast for 12 hours preceding collection of the specimen to ensure accurate results. It is important to follow proper specimen collection and handling procedures as outlined, including using the appropriate containers and centrifuging requirements, to prevent compromised results.
Limitations
The Comprehensive Metabolic Panel (CMP-14) provides a broad spectrum of information but is not specific for all conditions. Abnormal results may indicate a variety of disorders such as kidney disease, liver disease, or diabetes, but further testing might be required to diagnose specific diseases accurately. Some of the components can be affected by factors such as recent ingestion of food or drink (hence the requirement for fasting) and medications the patient is taking. It should be noted that the test cannot provide a diagnosis on its own without correlation with clinical findings and other diagnostic procedures.
