COVID-19 Triage Profile
Use
Assessment of patients at risk of progession to severe COVID-19 within 7 days from admission
Special Instructions
For optimal sample integrity and accuracy of results, it is vital that blood samples are collected properly. Evacuated collection tubes must be filled to ensure the correct blood-to-anticoagulant ratio. Immediate gentle mixing is required to prevent clotting. In instances where multiple tests are requested that necessitate frozen specimens, it is recommended to submit separate samples to prevent delays in testing.
Limitations
The COVID-19 Triage Profile cannot be used as a standalone diagnostic tool for COVID-19. Its results should be interpreted in conjunction with clinical findings and other laboratory tests. The variables included in this profile are not specific to COVID-19, and elevated levels might be observed in various inflammatory and thrombotic conditions. Therefore, the results should be considered within the broader clinical context. Particularly, D-dimer levels can naturally increase with age, which may affect the specificity of thrombotic event exclusion in older populations. Additionally, sample collection quality can impact the accuracy of the complete blood count components.

Collection Instructions
Blood should be collected in a blue-top tube containing 3.2% buffered sodium citrate. Evacuated collection tubes must be filled to completion to ensure a proper blood to anticoagulant ratio. The sample should be mixed immediately by gentle inversion at least six times to ensure adequate mixing of the anticoagulant with the blood.
