Crystals, Synovial/Joint Fluid
Use
Determine the cause of inflammation
Special Instructions
The test request form must clearly state the source of the synovial fluid to ensure accurate analysis. It is important to note the collection site on the container to avoid any misinterpretation of results. The information provided should be clear and precise to avoid specimen rejection due to improper labeling.
Limitations
The test is limited to synovial fluid specimens only and may not detect very low concentrations of crystals due to technical limitations. Specimens that are clotted, improperly labeled, or collected in a gel-barrier tube are subject to rejection. Stability is an issue as the specimen is unstable at room temperature and during freeze/thaw cycles, thus requiring strict adherence to storage and handling instructions. The procedural limitations may also affect the detection of smaller or less distinct crystals under polarized light microscopy.
