Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) Sulfate, Six Specimens
Use
This test assesses the level of dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEA-S) across six different specimens to evaluate adrenal gland function and hormone production. It is often used in conjunction with other tests to diagnose disorders such as adrenal tumors, congenital adrenal hyperplasia, or Cushing's syndrome. DHEA-S concentrations can aid in distinguishing between adrenal and gonadal sources of androgens, especially in women presenting with hirsutism or virilization.
Special Instructions
Please refer to the Endocrine Appendix of the LabCorp Directory of Services for instructions on multiple specimen collection. This panel requires multiple tubes to be drawn at different time points, with an initial baseline collection followed by treatment and additional collection. Patients should discontinue biotin supplementation 72 hours before collection to avoid interferences.
Limitations
Factors such as recent biotin supplementation or improper specimen collection timing may influence test results. The test may not be suitable for individuals currently undergoing biotin supplementation unless paused for at least 72 hours. The test's results can be affected by hormone treatments and require careful interpretation in the context of clinical findings.
