α-Fetoprotein (AFP) With AFP-L3%
Also known as: AFP With AFP-L3%, Alpha-Fetoprotein (AFP) With AFP-L3%
Use
The AFP-L3% assay is intended for use in the assessment of risk for the development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in patients with chronic liver diseases.1
Special Instructions
Values obtained with different assay methods should not be used interchangeably in serial testing. Consistent use of one assay method is recommended to monitor each patient's therapy course. This procedure is intended for one-time use only. For serial monitoring, use test number 480300. The test is not interpretable in pregnant females.
Limitations
Samples from patients with acute or fulminant hepatitis can yield high values of AFP-L3% and AFP, as can pregnancy and AFP-producing tumors other than HCC. Bilirubin >20 mg/dL and glucose >600 mg/dL can negatively affect AFP-L3% and AFP values. Normal AFP values only apply to males and nonpregnant females; infants under 18 months may have higher values. Results should not be used solely to diagnose malignancy without confirmation by other diagnostic procedures.
