Gastrin, Eight Specimens
Use
The Gastrin, Eight Specimens test is used to measure the gastrin level in a series of serum samples collected over a period of time following a specific treatment intervention. This is useful in assessing disorders related to gastric acid secretion such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, atrophic gastritis, or pernicious anemia. The test is designed to evaluate the body's response to a treatment that stimulates gastrin production, helping to identify abnormalities in gastric hormone regulation.
Special Instructions
This test requires multiple blood draws collected at specific time points after administering a drug or treatment (e.g., glucola). It must not be used unless a follow-up dose or treatment is administered after the initial draw. Patients should refrain from biotin supplements for at least 72 hours before sample collection to avoid interference.
Limitations
The test may show interference if the patient is taking biotin supplements, which should be discontinued at least 72 hours prior to the test. Additionally, any deviation in sample collection timing could affect the accuracy of results. Results interpretation should consider the treatment protocol applied, and a clinician should be consulted to determine the reason for the test series if not evident.
