Gastrin, Seven Specimens
Use
The Gastrin, Seven Specimens test is designed to assess and monitor gastrin levels in a series of blood samples taken sequentially after administering a drug or treatment to the patient. By measuring gastrin levels at multiple intervals, clinicians can evaluate how a patient’s gastrin production responds to stimulation caused by a treatment, such as glucola or a drug pill or shot. Assessing gastrin levels is important in diagnosing conditions like Zollinger-Ellison syndrome or in cases where hypergastrinemia is suspected.
Special Instructions
This test requires sequential sampling at multiple time points. An initial baseline tube is collected followed by tubes collected after treatment administration. Do not proceed with this test without administering the treatment after the first sample draw. Ensure the patient has ceased biotin supplementation at least 72 hours prior to sample collection to avoid interference.
Limitations
This test may show interference in patients consuming high doses of biotin. Be sure to inquire about biotin supplementation and advise discontinuation at least 72 hours before sampling. Turnaround times may be extended in cases where confirmatory or reflex tests are necessary, impacting the time frame for results delivery.
