Giardia lamblia, Direct Detection EIA and Cryptosporidium, Direct Detection EIA
Also known as: Cryptosporidium Antigen
Use
Rapid detection of Giardia and Cryptosporidium from clinical samples.
Special Instructions
Fecal specimens for testing should be collected before the initiation of antidiarrheal or antiparasitic therapy. It is recommended to submit one or two specimens per diarrheal illness immediately. If EIAs are negative, add-on testing for Ova and Parasites Examination should be considered.
Limitations
The test may not detect all variants of Giardia and Cryptosporidium. The highest yield for detection is when diarrhea is present on admission or within 72 hours in hospitalized patients. Diarrhea that begins more than 72 hours after admission is usually due to Clostridium difficile toxin rather than parasites.
