Gynecologic Pap Test (Image-guided), Liquid-based Preparation With Reflex to Human Papillomavirus (HPV) (Aptima®) When ASC-U, ASC-H, LSIL, HSIL, AGUS
Use
Diagnose primary or metastatic neoplasm. This test aids in the diagnosis of sexually transmitted HPV infection. High-risk HPV test is used for types 16, 18, 31, 33, 35, 39, 45, 51, 52, 56, 58, 59, 66, and 68, without differentiation of the individual type.
Special Instructions
Include all pertinent clinical information on the cytology test request form, such as date of birth, Social Security number, history of malignancy, drug or radiation therapy, last menstrual period, menopausal status, surgeries, hormone use, abnormal bleeding or Pap results, and presence of IUD. In cases where laboratory personnel suspect reactive or reparative cellular changes or atypical squamous or glandular cells, or premalignant/malignant categories, Pap tests may be referred for pathologist review, incurring additional charges.
Limitations
The test may yield suboptimal results if ectocervical, endocervical, or vaginal cell populations are insufficient. Excessive use of lubricating jelly can interfere with cytologic examination, possibly leading to unsatisfactory results. The specimen's reprocessing or HPV testing might be limited depending on the sample's initial volume in liquid-based cytology. A negative result does not rule out HPV infection due to potential low levels of infection or sampling error. This test detects the 14 most common high-risk HPV types and cannot determine the specific type of HPV present.
