Iron
Use
Aid in the evaluation of a number of conditions involving red cell production and destruction, iron metabolism, or iron transport
Special Instructions
Serum is the preferred specimen type; however, plasma using lithium heparin is also acceptable. EDTA plasma can result in decreased iron values and should be avoided.
Limitations
Extreme hemolysis in the specimen can lead to inaccurate results. Additionally, improper labeling or collection, as well as the use of oxalate, EDTA, or citrate plasma, can cause rejection of the sample. Repeat testing may not be feasible with suboptimal sample volumes.
