Lead, Venous Blood Pediatric
Also known as: Pb, Blood
Use
Monitor environmental lead exposure in children younger than 16 years.
Special Instructions
The CDC recommends specific timelines for confirmation testing based on the blood lead level (BLL) detected in screening tests. Care must be taken to mix blood thoroughly to prevent clotting, as clotted specimens will be rejected.
Limitations
This test was developed and its performance characteristics were determined by Labcorp. It has not been cleared or approved by the Food and Drug Administration, meaning it is not FDA-approved. It is important to note that no safe blood lead level has been identified, and levels above 3.5 µg/dL are associated with adverse health effects. As such, patient management must take into account patient age and CDC blood lead level ranges for recommended interventions.
