Measles (Rubeola), PCR, Swab
Use
The Measles (Rubeola) PCR test is used as the preferred method for detecting measles in patients with compatible symptoms (fever, malaise, cough, coryza and/or conjunctivitis).
Special Instructions
Specimens should be collected as soon as possible after the development of a rash to maximize the sensitivity of measles RNA detection. Throat specimen collection is preferred to improve test accuracy.
Limitations
A negative test result does not rule out infection with measles virus. Results should be interpreted in the context of clinical findings and serological testing. Improperly collected samples may yield false negative results. Sensitivity may be reduced if samples are not collected in the recommended timeframe or if viral variants affect assay performance.
