Metanephrines, Pheochromocytoma Evaluation
Also known as: Metanephrines, Random Urine, Pheochromocytoma Evaluation
Use
Diagnose the presence of a pheochromocytoma, neuroblastoma, and ganglioneuroblastoma
Special Instructions
Simultaneous measurement of urine creatinine allows for the expression of the metanephrine:creatinine ratio. Clinicians often use a threshold of >2.2 μg metanephrines/mg creatinine to differentiate pheochromocytoma from normal conditions, although individual clinical judgment is required to interpret test results in the context of patient-specific factors such as medications and dietary influences.
Limitations
The test was developed and its performance characteristics determined by LabCorp. It has not been cleared or approved by the Food and Drug Administration. Results may be influenced by medication and dietary factors; specific dietary items such as bananas, pineapple, and plums should be avoided before and during specimen collection. The test may not detect all cases of pheochromocytoma due to variable tumor catecholamine secretion or low-volume tumor mass.
