Myeloperoxidase (MPO)
Also known as: MPO
Use
Elevated levels of plasma MPO are a sensitive indicator of inflammatory disorders.
Special Instructions
Ensure precautions are taken during sample preparation to avoid carryover of red blood cells or buffy coat white cells. Plasma samples should be refrigerated immediately after collection and centrifuged within two hours.
Limitations
Erratic results can occur if plasma is not centrifuged and separated from red cells immediately. The results of this test are labeled for 'research purposes only' and should not be used for treatment without confirmation by another diagnostic procedure. Increased MPO levels may be observed if plasma samples remain on gels for more than eight hours before being transferred to separate tubes.

Minimum Volume
0.2 mL
Container
Lavender-top (EDTA) tube or green-top (heparin) tube
Collection Instructions
Collect whole blood using venipuncture techniques. Gently mix blood with anticoagulant by inverting the sample tube several times. Refrigerate or place on ice immediately, centrifuge at 2°C to 8°C within two hours of collection.
Storage Instructions
Store plasma samples at 2°C to 8°C immediately. Plasma samples prepared by gel-based vacuum tubes should be transferred to separated tubes from the top of the gels immediately after centrifugation.
Causes for Rejection
Specimen type other than heparinized plasma or EDTA plasma; samples left on gels for more than eight hours before transferring; specimen received at room temperature
