Phencyclidine (PCP) Screen With Reflex Confirmation, Whole Blood
Use
This test is used for the detection of phencyclidine (PCP) in whole blood. Phencyclidine, commonly known as PCP, is a recreational dissociative drug formerly used as an anesthetic agent. Blood testing for PCP is typically performed for drug abuse screenings or in clinical settings where PCP intoxication is suspected.
Special Instructions
Initial testing is conducted using an immunoassay screening method. If the sample yields a presumptive positive result, it is followed by a confirmation test using definitive chromatography mass spectrometry (GC/MS) or LC/MS-MS. The test is performed to ensure accuracy and reliability in detecting PCP presence in the bloodstream.
Limitations
This test's performance characteristics have been determined by LabCorp, but it has not been cleared or approved by the FDA. False positives and negatives can occur; confirmatory testing is necessary to validate a positive immunoassay screening. The variability in metabolism and excretion of PCP among individuals may affect test results.
