Pneumocystis Smear
Also known as: Pneumocystis carinii Stain, PCP (Pneumocystis carinii Pneumonia)
Use
Determine the presence of Pneumocystis carinii
Special Instructions
Noninduced expectorated sputum specimens are not recommended. Ensure specimens are stored and transported correctly to avoid rejection.
Limitations
The test cannot differentiate between colonization and active infection, so clinical correlation is essential. False negatives may occur due to the low organism load or suboptimal specimen collection. Swab specimens are not suitable for this test.
Methodology
Immunoassay (Direct or indirect fluorescent antibody (DFA))
Biomarkers
LOINC Codes
- 700-5
- 700-5
