Postejaculatory Urine Microscopic Examination for Sperm
Use
This test is used in diagnosing retrograde ejaculation, a condition where ejaculated fluids are redirected towards the urinary bladder instead of exiting through the urethra. This can occur due to surgical procedures, medications, diabetes, or male infertility. The test measures the presence of sperm in postmasturbatory urine, which would be absent in the antegrade ejaculate.
Special Instructions
To diagnose retrograde ejaculation, it is necessary to evaluate urine after ejaculation. Patients are instructed to cleanse the penis with water and collect urine immediately in a clean container. Care must be taken to ensure the entire specimen is collected.
Limitations
This test is developed by LabCorp and its performance characteristics have not been cleared or approved by the FDA. Retrograde ejaculation may be suspected if semen volume is less than 1 mL. The evaluation of postmasturbatory urine is crucial for diagnosing the condition. Specimens must be analyzed within specific timeframes to ensure accurate results.
