Prolactin, Three Specimens
Use
The Prolactin, Three Specimens test measures the levels of prolactin, a hormone produced by the pituitary gland, in the blood at three different times. This test is useful in diagnosing pituitary disorders, such as prolactinomas, which are benign pituitary tumors that secrete prolactin. It can also help in evaluating patients with menstrual disorders, infertility, and pituitary gland dysfunction.
Special Instructions
Please refer to the directions for Sequential Sampling when preparing for this test. Sequential sampling involves the collection of three blood specimens over a specified period, as instructed by the healthcare provider.
Limitations
The test results may be influenced by stress, medication, and other factors such as the timing of the specimen collection. It is important to follow the sequential sampling instructions accurately to ensure the reliability of the test results. Cross-reactivity with other proteins or hormones is not expected but cannot be entirely excluded. Laboratory variation in measurement and external factors such as sample handling can also affect the results.
