Prostatic Acid Phosphatase (PAP)
Also known as: Acid Phosphatase, Prostatic
Use
An adjunct in the evaluation of possible prostatic malignancy and useful in monitoring therapeutic progress
Special Instructions
This test is not the same as Acid Phosphatase. Values obtained with different assays should not be used interchangeably in serial testing. It is recommended that only one assay method be used consistently to monitor each patient's therapy course. This procedure does not provide serial monitoring and is intended for one-time use only. If serial monitoring is required, use the serial monitoring number 480152.
Limitations
Values obtained with different assays or kits cannot be used interchangeably, and results should not be interpreted as conclusive evidence of malignant disease presence or absence. PAP is more specific than PSA, resulting in fewer false positives due to benign prostatic hyperplasia. It is most effective when used in conjunction with PSA for a comprehensive assessment.
