Renin Activity, Plasma, Four Specimens
Use
The Renin Activity, Plasma test with multiple specimens is designed to assess the renin activity levels at various time points after an intervention, such as medication or other treatments. This helps in evaluating the renin-angiotensin system's functionality, which plays a crucial role in the regulation of blood pressure and fluid balance. The test is often used in conjunction with others to diagnose and manage conditions such as hypertension, adrenal disorders, and certain forms of hyperaldosteronism.
Special Instructions
This test is part of a series panel which requires the collection of multiple tubes at specific time intervals following an intervention, such as administration of a drug or other treatment. It is imperative to consult the Endocrine Appendix of the LabCorp Directory of Services for instructions prior to ordering and to only use the test if treatment is administered after the initial draw. Contact the clinician to confirm the rationale for a series collection before proceeding.
Limitations
The test's performance has not been approved or cleared by the Food and Drug Administration. It is crucial to note that samples must be handled properly to avoid rejection, which includes ensuring samples are frozen, separated, and collected using EDTA plasma. Improper collection and handling can lead to inaccurate results, which may mislead clinical decisions. Additionally, interpretations should consider the lack of established reference intervals for some specimens and understand that extreme values may require confirmation through alternative methods.
