Renin Activity, Plasma, Seven Specimens
Use
The Renin Activity, Plasma, Seven Specimens test is used to evaluate renal and adrenal function by measuring plasma renin activity through sequential sampling at multiple time points following a specified treatment protocol. It aids in the diagnosis of hypertension due to renal or adrenal disorders. Timely measuring plasma renin helps in the evaluation of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, which can be useful in the differential diagnosis of primary and secondary aldosteronism.
Special Instructions
Refer to the directions for Sequential Sampling found in the Directory of Services. This test is a series panel requiring multiple tubes to be drawn at multiple time points. It is essential not to initiate this panel without a specific treatment intervention, such as medication or other treatments like glucola. If no treatment is administered after the initial sample draw, the panel should not be used. Coordination with the clinician is necessary to determine the rationale behind ordering this series test.
Limitations
This test must be conducted exactly as per the protocol involving pre-treatment and sequential sampling. Failure to adhere to specified timings or using non-EDTA plasma specimens could affect the accuracy and reliability of the results. Samples that are not promptly frozen or properly separated are prone to rejection. Additional confirmatory tests may be necessary depending on interim results, potentially affecting timeliness or the overall diagnostic path.
