Salivary Cortisol (Five Specimens), MS (Endocrine Sciences)
Use
This test is used to measure cortisol levels from saliva across five different time points to evaluate the function of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. Cortisol is a steroid hormone that plays a crucial role in a wide range of processes throughout the body, including metabolism and the immune response. Dysfunction in cortisol levels can be indicative of conditions such as Cushing's syndrome, Addison's disease, and other adrenal gland disorders.
Special Instructions
Available for testing at five distinct time points. Each saliva specimen must be labeled with the patient's name, collection time, and date. All specimens should be submitted simultaneously on the same request form. Specialized kits for salivary testing are available and must be ordered through a Labcorp representative.
Limitations
This test measures cortisol levels from saliva, which may not directly correlate with serum cortisol levels due to the different mediums. External factors such as stress, time of day, and recent food intake can affect cortisol levels, potentially impacting the test results. It is important to follow the specific collection instructions and timings to ensure accuracy of the test.
