Salivary Cortisol, MS (Endocrine Sciences)
Use
The salivary cortisol test is used to measure the level of cortisol in the saliva. Cortisol is a steroid hormone produced by the adrenal glands and is involved in the response to stress and regulation of metabolism, immune response, and inflammation. This test helps in diagnosing disorders related to abnormal cortisol production, such as Cushing's syndrome or Addison's disease, and in assessing the function of the adrenal glands.
Special Instructions
Saliva samples should be collected using a Salivette collection device. Specialized kits are available for salivary testing and can be ordered through your Labcorp representative using PeopleSoft No. 123724. Samples should be stored refrigerated after collection to ensure stability.
Limitations
The salivary cortisol test may be limited by factors such as improper sample collection or contamination, which can affect results. Variability in cortisol secretion due to diurnal rhythm or stress may also impact the accuracy of single sample results. Multiple samples at different times of day are often needed for a comprehensive assessment of adrenal function.
