Soluble Transferrin Receptor
Also known as: sTfR, Transferrin Receptor
Use
Measurement of sTfR is used to diagnose iron deficiency in individuals with chronic disease (inflammatory diseases, infections, malignancies), many of whom are anemic.
Special Instructions
Separate serum or plasma from cells and transfer to a plastic transport tube.
Limitations
Standard measures of iron status, such as ferritin, total iron-binding capacity, and serum iron are directly affected by chronic disease, whereas sTfR is not. It is important to note that while sTfR is a useful marker, other factors affecting iron metabolism and erythropoiesis may also influence the results and should be considered.
