Use
Establish the presence of primary or metastatic neoplasms; aid in the diagnosis of respiratory infections with herpesvirus, Cryptococcus, Coccidioides, Histoplasma, Blastomyces, Phycomycetes, Strongyloides, Echinococcus, Paragonimus, and asbestosis.
Special Instructions
It is crucial to include the patient's name, date of birth, sex, Social Security number, previous malignancy, drug therapy, radiation therapy, exposure to carcinogens, and all other pertinent clinical information on the request form. For induced sputum samples, contact Inhalation Therapy. Include admitting diagnosis and pertinent clinical history (i.e., age, clinical diagnosis, exposure to carcinogens) on the request form.
Limitations
If pulmonary macrophages are not identified in the sample, the specimen will be reported as unsatisfactory for adequate evaluation. Sputa prepared with fixatives containing 50% ethyl alcohol, such as Saccomanno fixative, are not suitable for microbiology testing.

Collection Instructions
Patient should perform oral hygiene and collect first morning sputum directly into Saccomanno or 50% ethyl alcohol fixative in container for three consecutive mornings. Close container and shake vigorously after collection.
Patient Preparation
Instruct the patient to thoroughly cleanse mouth before collection.
Storage Instructions
Maintain specimen at room temperature.

Improper labeling; specimen without fixative; saliva or nasal aspirates; frozen specimen
