Acute Viral Hepatitis Profile, Serum
Use
This test is useful for the differential diagnosis of recent acute viral hepatitis. It effectively screens for the presence of hepatitis A, B, and C infections, which are significant causes of liver disease. Hepatitis A is typically transmitted via the oral/fecal route, while hepatitis B can be spread through percutaneous and bodily fluids contact. Hepatitis C commonly spreads through contaminated blood. The panel helps assess these infections, which can have significant implications for patient health, including the risk of chronic liver disease and liver cancer in the scope of hepatitis B and C.
Special Instructions
It is essential that the date of collection is indicated, and patients should avoid taking multivitamins or supplements with biotin for at least 24 hours before specimen collection to prevent interference with test results. Use the Sarstedt Aliquot Tube for specimen submission and ensure proper centrifugation instructions are followed.
Limitations
False-negative results may occur in patients taking biotin supplements at high doses (20 mg or more per day) due to assay interference. Conditions such as gross hemolysis, lipemia, icterus, and heat-inactivation of samples can lead to specimen rejection. Proper handling and storage are critical to ensure the accuracy of results. The testing methodology, while robust, requires precise procedural adherence to avoid diagnostic confusion or erroneous results.
