Alveolar Rhabdomyosarcoma (ARMS), 13q14 (FOXO1 or FKHR) Rearrangement, FISH, Tissue
Use
This test is useful for supporting the diagnosis of alveolar rhabdomyosarcomas (ARMS) in conjunction with an anatomic pathology consultation. ARMS are a subtype of rhabdomyosarcomas that are more common in older children and associated with a higher stage disease and an unfavorable prognosis. Most cases of ARMS are linked to the rearrangement of the FOXO1 gene on chromosome 13. Detection of FOXO1 rearrangement by FISH can help support a histologic diagnosis of ARMS.
Special Instructions
A pathology report is required for testing. If not provided, testing and/or interpretation may be delayed or compromised. Include patient name, block number, date of collection, tissue source, and reason for testing in the report. Consultation orderable separately.
Limitations
This test is not approved by the US Food and Drug Administration and should be used as an adjunct to existing clinical and pathologic information. The FISH assay does not exclude other chromosomal abnormalities nor is it successful with non-formalin fixed specimens or decalcified tissues, which have approximately a 50% success rate. Testing may be canceled if insufficient tumor is available.

Collection Instructions
Submit a formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tumor tissue block. Blocks prepared with alternative fixation methods are less favorable for successful results by FISH testing.
