Anatomic Pathology Consultation, Wet Tissue
Use
A diagnostic consultative service for unprocessed ‘wet’ tissue specimens—such as lung tissue for immunofluorescence, cardiac biopsies, enucleated eye specimens (iris, conjunctiva, cornea), and other small eye biopsies—referred by a pathologist. This test is not appropriate for hematologic disorders. ([mayocliniclabs.com](https://www.mayocliniclabs.com/test-catalog/Overview/70318?utm_source=openai))
Special Instructions
Laboratory approval is required prior to ordering this test; contact Mayo Clinic Laboratories at 800‑533‑1710. A formal pathology report interpreting the specimen will be provided. Appropriate stains and other ancillary testing may be performed at additional charge, at the reviewing pathologist’s discretion. In certain cases, Mayo Clinic may contact the ordering provider or pathologist by phone. For paraffin embedded tissue and slides only, order PATHC / Pathology Consultation instead. Vitreous fluid/aqueous humor specimens require overnight shipping and attention from the Ophthalmic Pathology Working Group; use green “Attention Pathology” label (T498). All requisitions must include patient identifiers, referring pathologist/provider info, and anatomic site and collection date; additional information (e.g., clinical history, imaging, echocardiogram for cardiac explant cases, or surgical notes for eye biopsies) should be submitted when relevant. Limitations
This consultation is not suitable for suspected hematologic disorders. Ancillary tests requested by the referring provider (immunostains, molecular studies, etc.) may not be performed if deemed unnecessary by the Mayo Clinic reviewing pathologist.
