Antimicrobial Susceptibility, Nocardia species and other Aerobic Actinomycetes, Varies
Use
This test is used for determining the resistance of species of Nocardia and other aerobic actinomycetes to antimicrobial agents. It is particularly useful for guiding antibiotic treatment in infections caused by these organisms, which can cause significant disease, especially in immunocompromised patients. Clinical presentations can include pneumonia, skin abscess, bacteremia, brain abscess, eye infection, and joint infection.
Special Instructions
Specimen must be in pure culture and actively growing on appropriate media without antimicrobials. Specimen source and organism identification are required unless specific concurrent identification tests are ordered. Shipping must follow infectious specimen guidelines.
Limitations
This test is not useful for the resistance determination of aerobic actinomycetes species from genera such as Actinoallomurus, Actinocatenispora, Actinoplanes, among others. Specimen rejection may occur if the sample is on an agar plate or contains non-viable organisms.
