Arsenic, Nails
Use
Detection of nonacute arsenic exposure in nail specimens. Arsenic accumulates in keratin-rich tissues such as nails, where levels can indicate exposure weeks to months prior. Nails grow slowly (approximately 0.1 inch/month), so distal clippings reflect exposure from about six months ago. Nail arsenic above 1.0 mcg/g dry weight may indicate excessive exposure; normal exposure results in trace amounts.
