Ascaris, IgE, Serum
Use
The Ascaris, IgE, Serum test is useful for diagnosing an allergy to Ascaris worms. It helps define the allergen responsible for triggering allergy symptoms, identifies allergens responsible for allergic responses or anaphylactic episodes, confirms sensitization before starting immunotherapy, and investigates allergen specificity related to insect venom, drugs, or chemical allergens.
Special Instructions
If not ordering electronically, complete the Allergen Test Request (T236) form and send it with the specimen.
Limitations
Testing for IgE antibodies is not useful in patients previously treated with immunotherapy to determine if residual clinical sensitivity exists. It is also not helpful in patients where medical management does not depend on the identification of allergen specificity. Some individuals with insignificant clinical sensitivity may show measurable IgE levels, and false positives can occur in patients with very high serum IgE levels due to nonspecific binding.
