Blastomyces Antibody Immunodiffusion, Spinal Fluid
Use
The test is useful for detecting antibodies in spinal fluid specimens from patients with blastomycosis. Blastomycosis is caused by the dimorphic fungus Blastomyces dermatitidis, which leads to pulmonary disease and can spread to skin, bone, or internal genitalia. While central nervous system disease is uncommon, this test helps identify presence of antibodies that might reflect intrathecal antibody production.
Special Instructions
Ensure proper collection of spinal fluid, following instructions to submit specimen from collection vial number 2, 3, or 4. Complete and send the Infectious Disease Serology Test Request form if not ordering electronically.
Limitations
A negative result does not exclude the possibility of blastomycosis. Cross-reactions may occur in patients with histoplasmosis. Results do not distinguish between active disease and prior exposure. Routine fungal culture is recommended alongside this test in cases of suspected CNS blastomycosis.
