Calcitonin (CALCI) Immunostain, Technical Component Only
Use
Calcitonin immunostain aids in the identification of C cells of the thyroid, medullary thyroid carcinomas, many atypical laryngeal carcinoids, and other neuroendocrine tumors. It is used to produce fine granular, cytoplasmic staining of these cells, which is useful in confirming the presence of calcitonin-producing cells. Amyloid deposits within medullary thyroid carcinoma may also exhibit varying degrees of calcitonin immunoreactivity, which this test can help visualize.
Special Instructions
This test includes only the technical performance of the stain with no pathologist interpretation. It should not be ordered with a Pathology Consultation (PATHC) since the technical component stains will be canceled if ordered together. Appropriate use of green pathology address label and pink Immunostain Technical Only label is required for test processing.
Limitations
The charge of glass slides can be affected by environmental factors, possibly altering the quality of slide staining. Age of paraffin sections might affect immunoreactivity, with best practice being sections cut within 6 weeks. Positively charged slides should be stored minimizing exposure to humidity, heat, and plastics for optimal results. Noncompliance with these recommendations might lead to inconsistent staining results.
