Carcinoembryonic Antigen, Polyclonal Immunostain, Technical Component Only
Use
This test is useful as a marker of epithelial cells, particularly within the small and large intestine, stomach, and pancreatic ducts. It involves the use of polyclonal carcinoembryonic antigen (pCEA) to label normal and neoplastic epithelium. The polyclonal antibody also reacts with biliary canaliculi and granulocytes, providing valuable clinical insights into epithelial malignancies.
Special Instructions
This test includes only the technical performance of the immunostain; no pathologist interpretation is provided. Technical component stains should not be ordered with PATHC / Pathology Consultation. If ordered together, the technical component stain will be canceled. Ensure proper electronic ordering to access digital images.
Limitations
The test does not include pathologist interpretation, only technical performance of the stain. Age and condition of paraffin sections can affect immunoreactivity. Best practices for storing positively charged slides include minimizing time stored after unpackaging and limiting exposure to high humidity and heat, to prevent inconsistent staining due to poor slide surface chemistry.
