Casein, IgE, Serum
Use
The Casein, IgE test is useful for establishing a diagnosis of an allergy to casein. It helps in defining the specific allergen responsible for eliciting allergic signs and symptoms, such as allergic responses and anaphylactic episodes. This test is particularly useful for confirming sensitization before initiating immunotherapy and for investigating reaction specificity to various allergens, including insect venom, drugs, or chemical allergens. Testing for IgE antibodies provides insight into the immune response to allergens potentially associated with allergic diseases.
Special Instructions
For a listing of available allergens for testing, see 'Allergens - Immunoglobulin E (IgE) Antibodies' on Mayo Clinic Labs website. If not ordering electronically, complete and send an 'Allergen Test Request' (T236) with the specimen.
Limitations
Testing for IgE antibodies is not useful in patients who have undergone immunotherapy to determine if residual clinical sensitivity remains. Additionally, it is not recommended for patients where medical management does not depend on allergen specificity identification. False positives may occur in patients with significantly elevated serum IgE levels (>2500 kU/L), resulting in nonspecific binding to the allergen solid phases.
