Cathepsin K Immunostain, Technical Component Only
Use
This test is useful for the evaluation of perivascular epithelioid cell neoplasms (PEComas), alveolar soft part sarcoma, and translocation-associated renal cell carcinomas. Cathepsin K is a protease whose expression is driven by microphthalmia transcription factor, and it is expressed in renal PEComas, alveolar soft part sarcoma, and most MiT family translocation renal cell carcinomas, including those with TFEB rearrangements and amplifications, and TFE3 gene fusions.
Special Instructions
This test includes only technical performance of the stain; no pathologist interpretation is provided. Technical component only stains should not be ordered with PATHC/Pathology Consultation. If ordered with PATHC, the technical component stains will be canceled. Any IHC/ISH stain performed as a part of the PATHC will be performed at the reviewing pathologist's discretion at an additional charge.
Limitations
Only the technical performance of the stain is performed; pathologist interpretation is not included. Age of a cut paraffin section can affect immunoreactivity, and it is best practice to cut paraffin sections within 6 weeks to ensure optimal results. Environmental factors can affect the charge of glass slides, leading to inconsistent staining, so proper slide storage is important. Uncharged slides and slides not properly labeled or stored may be rejected.
