CD34 Immunostain, Technical Component Only
Use
CD34 (cluster of differentiation 34) is a 115 kDa membrane-associated antigen found on human hematopoietic progenitor cells and vascular endothelial cells. It is used as a marker of immaturity in acute myeloid leukemia or B-cell lymphoblastic leukemia. Additionally, CD34 is helpful in the diagnosis of gastrointestinal stromal tumors, solitary fibrous tumors, and angiosarcomas. For these reasons, the test is valuable in the clinical setting to differentiate between particular types of tumors and diagnose hematological disorders.
Special Instructions
This test only includes technical performance of the stain without pathologist interpretation. Technical component only stains should not be ordered with PATHC / Pathology Consultation. If ordered with PATHC, the technical component stains will be canceled. Specimen should be shipped with the appropriate green and pink labels.
Limitations
The test does not provide pathologist interpretation; it only includes the technical performance of the stain. The antigen stability can be affected by the age of a cut paraffin section and environmental factors affecting the charge of glass slides, potentially leading to inconsistent staining. Interpretation should be done in the context of the patient's clinical history by a qualified pathologist.
