Clinical Use

Use

CD56 (cluster of differentiation 56) is an adhesion molecule mediating homophilic and heterophilic adhesion in neurons, natural killer cells, and a small subset of CD4- and CD8-positive T cells. It is expressed in tumors with neuroendocrine differentiation, such as small cell lung carcinoma and neural-derived tumors, or natural killer cell lineage, such as a subset of lymphomas. CD56 immunostain aids in identifying tumors with these characteristics and may also show strong staining in ganglion cells and nerves in normal small intestine.

Special Instructions

This test includes only the technical performance of the CD56 immunostain and does not include pathologist interpretation. Technical component only stains should not be ordered with PATHC / Pathology Consultation, as those will be canceled. For the technical component only immunohistochemical (IHC) stain performed, appropriate bill only test ID will be reflexed and charged.

Limitations

This test does not include pathologist interpretation, only the technical performance of the stain. Interpretation should be performed considering the patient's clinical history and other diagnostic tests by a qualified pathologist. Factors such as the age of a paraffin section and the storage conditions of slides can affect immunoreactivity and staining consistency.
