Chimerism-Donor, Varies
Use
This test is useful for evaluating donor cells prior to bone marrow transplant. It determines the relative amounts of donor and recipient cells in a specimen, which serves as an indicator of bone marrow transplant success. Donor hematopoietic cell engraftment can be monitored by identifying unique features of donor's and recipient's DNA.
Special Instructions
The test is part of a complete chimerism analysis requiring three different specimens submitted under individual orders. It should be noted that specimen must arrive within 7 days of collection.
Limitations
The sensitivity varies with proportions of donor and recipient cells in the specimen. Results are approximate and typically rounded to the nearest 5% or 10%. Short tandem repeat patterns might be non-informative in matched related stem cell transplants, where alternative approaches might be needed.
