Chloride, Feces
Use
This test is useful in the workup of chronic diarrhea and in evaluating suspected chloridorrhea, including congenital and acquired forms, by quantifying fecal chloride concentrations to help identify disruption in intestinal chloride absorption mechanisms.
Special Instructions
This test is only clinically valid if performed on watery specimens; formed fecal specimens will not be performed. Patient preparation: avoid barium, laxatives, or enemas for 96 hours prior to and during collection.
Limitations
Falsely high chloride values may occur in patients receiving perchlorate medications due to analytical interference with the chloride ion‑selective electrode. All specimens will be evaluated at Mayo Clinic Laboratories for test suitability; test will not be performed on formed stool.
