Chronic Viral Hepatitis (Unknown Type), Serum
Use
The Chronic Viral Hepatitis Profile is used for the diagnosis and evaluation of patients with symptoms of hepatitis lasting more than 6 months. It is particularly useful in distinguishing between chronic hepatitis B and C infections, helping to guide management and treatment decisions. This test measures various antibodies and antigens associated with hepatitis B and C to provide a comprehensive profile of the patient's serological status.
Special Instructions
Patient should avoid taking multivitamins or dietary supplements containing biotin (vitamin B7) for at least 24 hours before specimen collection. For electronic ordering, the Gastroenterology and Hepatology Test Request or Infectious Disease Serology Test Request forms may be utilized if applicable.
Limitations
Assay performance characteristics have not been established for patients under 21 years, pregnant women, or immunocompromised populations. Grossly hemolyzed, icteric, lipemic specimens, or those with high biotin levels may produce unreliable results. Transplacental passage of maternal HCV IgG can cause false-reactive results in infants up to 18 months old. Moreover, biotin supplements may interfere with assay results.
