Use
This assay is useful for detecting cobalt exposure via a random urine collection and for monitoring metallic prosthetic implant wear. It is explicitly noted that this test is not useful for assessing vitamin B12 activity.
Special Instructions
Specimen collection procedures require ultraclean specimen collection and handling with special collection tubes in an ultraclean facility to avoid misleading elevated urine cobalt results. Patient preparation instructions note that high concentrations of gadolinium‑ or iodine‑containing contrast media may interfere and a specimen should not be collected within 96 hours of administration.
Limitations
Due to potential interference from improper collection, handling, or contamination by contrast media, elevated urine cobalt results may be incidental and misleading without rigorous ultraclean procedures.
