Corn Pollen, IgE, Serum
Use
This test is useful for establishing a diagnosis of an allergy to corn pollen. It helps define the allergen responsible for eliciting signs and symptoms in patients. Additionally, it identifies allergens responsible for allergic responses and/or anaphylactic episodes. The test is important for confirming sensitization prior to starting immunotherapy. However, testing for IgE antibodies is not useful in patients who have been previously treated with immunotherapy to determine residual clinical sensitivity or in cases where medical management does not depend on allergen specificity.
Special Instructions
For ordering, if not done electronically, complete and send the 'Allergen Test Request' form with the specimen. Specimen collection requires centrifugation and aliquoting of serum into a plastic vial. Minimum volume for testing varies depending on the number of allergens requested.
Limitations
Testing for IgE antibodies might show measurable levels in individuals with clinically insignificant sensitivity to allergens. False positives may occur in patients with markedly elevated serum IgE (>2500 kU/L), due to nonspecific binding of IgE antibodies to allergen solid phases.
